Bringing Extended Reality by Leveraging Gamification

Dave Ranyard had a remarkable journey with a background in computer science and held his degree and PhD in artificial intelligence from the University of Leeds. Dave’s prudence and leadership made this company diversify its services, including original game development and web-based projects. His vision has led the business to overcome remote work challenges and foster a multidisciplinary team that excels in engineering, design, the arts, production, and other areas.

What are the challenges that the gaming industry faces today?

Computing and technology are continuously evolving and the gaming industry stands out as extremely competitive.

The introduction of unique features, often led by technology, has become essential in today's world. As someone who has worked in the gaming industry, I can attest to the fact that we love to take on new challenges. During my time at Sony, we were able to create the first-ever augmented-reality games by utilizing computers and cameras to enhance the video game experience. It was a thrilling and rewarding experience. Recently, there has been significant growth and advancement in the field of artificial intelligence. The emergence of extensive language models as a consumer product is particularly exciting. However, this has also led to an increase in misinformation. It is crucial for businesses to understand the capabilities of these new AI systems and differentiate between generative and predictive AI. The challenge is for businesses to stay competitive and realistic about what AI can do for them by gaining a better understanding of the AI landscape.

How are you at Dream Reality Interactive mitigating these challenges?

I frequently travel to various conferences to build a solid and extensive network. This includes attending talks by experts and connecting with companies, research institutions, and universities. This allows me to stay up-to-date with the latest technology trends and scale their practicality.

In the past, there was often a gap between cutting-edge research and consumer products. For instance, early speech recognition systems could have been better, especially on telephony systems.

However, today, when you call a service and describe your issue briefly, it usually understands you correctly. So, being on the cutting edge involves cultivating this difference. It's important to realize that a great product demo only sometimes translates to seamless real-world usage. The gaming industry relies less on research papers and more on products that excite consumers.

Additionally, I serve as an advisor for the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, a role I have had for 18 years. With a group of twenty-five, we together work on the production and management and the business and commercial streams. This gives me access to thousands of conference submissions and allows me to help select content. I review around Two to Three Hundred submissions and ultimately choose 10 to 20 percent to be presented at the conference. This is an invaluable source of knowledge because it reflects what the gaming industry finds most exciting and essential. I also mentored 5-7 of the selected presenters through the process, further deepening my understanding of their work and the industry. So, this is an excellent way to stay informed about developments in our field.

Could you share with our readers about the upcoming technologies in the gaming industry?

When Dream Reality first began, we were involved in virtual reality projects. Looking back, I recall a concept called the "hype cycle" for emerging technologies. It begins with a peak of excitement, followed by what they call the "trough of disillusionment" when people realize it doesn't meet all their expectations. This pattern is evident in the virtual reality and immersive tech industry, back to around 2012, when Sony announced its headset in 2014 during my time at Sony.

We operate within a diverse range of digital media and conduct client concept development workshops, led by our highly experienced designers, to align with the core vision of our target audience.

One of the significant events this year was Apple's announcement of the Vision Pro and Vision OS. Apple, known for taking its time to create top-notch products, has entered the scene. Their mixed reality headset appears impressive. What excites me most is the headset itself and the spatial OS it relies on. This technology understands your surroundings and seamlessly integrates virtual elements into your actual environment. It's a complex task to make mixed reality feel believable since you are merging virtual with the real world, requiring precise placement and lighting. Apple's entry into this space has updated the industry. As a result, many other headset manufacturers are now re-entering the market in response to Apple's announcements.

What would be your piece of advice to your young entrepreneurs?

There are a few key aspects to consider. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a gaming competition at a convention in Cologne, Germany. We identified three approaches during our discussions on investment criteria, particularly for entrepreneurs. Initially, a solid concept is crucial. It must address a consumer need and offer differentiation. After that, a capable team is essential to bring the idea to fruition. Last, there must be a clear market fit, like good knowledge about genuine demand and a substantial consumer base.

Additionally, evaluating the team's initial experience is vital. Another key advice applicable to any project is to focus on doing one thing exceptionally well. Avoid overloading your product with excessive features. Instead, prioritize refining core features, and once they prove successful, consider adding more when you have a solid audience.
